General Interpretation and Meaning of The Magician - Upright & Reversed

The Magician, also known as the Juggler or the Magus, is the first trump in the Major Arcana of tarot decks. It is considered the lowest trump card based on honors. However, in the occult traditions, The Magician is held accountable for having esoteric features and is numbered as the first. In that manner, it is the second in Major Arcana and succeeds the Fool. 

It is the symbol of power, potential and represents an amalgamation or unification of the worlds; both the physical and spiritual worlds. 

The Magician holds numerous symbolisms. According to the Rider- Waite deck, it is illustrated as one hand lifted, pointed towards the sky, and the other one is pointing downwards, showing the ground. It represents the two worlds or realms between which we dwindle in our thoughts. 

There is a table in front of him, on the table we can see a cup, a weird, a spectacle embossed in probably metal, and a wand. These are symbolic of the four suits of the tarot deck. They also signify the four elements, Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. These elements are laid randomly on the table, and The Magician has the power to pick any of them as per his will. He is also holding a white wand with double-ended blades in his right hand. He is also wearing a white robe, representing his purity and piousness. His hand gestures make it evident that he has equal conduct towards both the spheres. The mantle is red, representing willpower, passion, rage, and ego.  

In the Marseilles deck, The Magician can be seen having six fingers in the left hand. This represents his manipulative power of deceiving. The table here has three legs instead of four, the fourth leg is believed to be out of the card. You can also see a flower growing between his feet, this flower has a sexual interpretation. But as a whole, it is symbolic of Mother Nature.

The Magician card, when pulled upright, indicates new beginnings and newer opportunities. It shows your connection with both the realms: physical and spiritual.
